  1. Apply early for both college and scholarships. This gives you a chance to really gain your bearing in the sea of schools (and scholarships) without having the pressure of an immediate deadline looming over your head.
  2. Apply for all of the scholarships you come across and are eligible for through websites like College Prowler, because someone has to win those scholarships.
  3. Regarding essays, write what you know, and write the way you speak; this will make the reader feel like they know you.

Campus Housing at the University of Illinois:

"The most popular place to be freshman year is the Six-Pack, located in the center of campus closest to the Memorial Football Stadium and Assembly Hall Basketball Arena. It's not as nice as the private dorms, but it's socially the best bet. Most people will tell you that by their senior year, their best friends are people that they met in the Six-Pack as freshmen."

"After talking to my friends at other schools, I’ve decided Indiana has the best classes of any university. Along with your average and above average quality core classes, there is a beautiful mix of courses like History of Rock & Roll, Outdoor Adventure Education, Aikido, and Downhill Skiing. There are yellow call-boxes wired directly to the Purdue Police Department every 100 yards (they say that if you hit one call-box, a squad car will be waiting by the next one that you run to). Also, all of the residence halls are locked down at 11:00 p.m., after which you have to swipe your ID.”

April 2007 Winner

Kelly Collier

Kelly is a graduating senior at West Mifflin High School in West Mifflin, PA. She has been accepted to Carnegie Mellon University and will attend later this year.

Kelly was awarded first prize of a $1,000 scholarship and 10 College Prowler Guidebooks.

Here's a tip for Kelly about Carnegie Mellon's internet connectivity, straight from the College Prowler Guidebook to Carnegie Mellon University:

Computers @ Carnegie Mellon.

We are supposedly the most wired campus in the country. We have 17 computer clusters and now even a wireless network-that means you can use the Internet anywhere on campus; all you need is a wireless Ethernet card. This school is one of the best places to study computers, so we have good facilities for both Macs and PCs. You can usually find an open computer; if you can't in one place, a nearby cluster will have an open one. I have even heard rumors that if an enemy country wanted to drop a nuclear bomb on the U.S., CMU is one of the first targets because the CIA has headquarters and top-secret computers located here! I'm not sure if that's true.

March 2007 Winner

Emily Tung

Emily is a senior at Moorpark High School in Moorpark, CA. She has been accepted to UC Berkeley and will attend later this year.

Emily was awarded first prize of a $1,000 scholarship and 10 College Prowler Guidebooks.

Here's a tip for Emily about what to expect in Berkeley, CA, straight from the College Prowler Guidebook to UC Berkeley:

Local Atmosphere @ UC Berkeley.

Berkeley is definitely the kind of place you can roll out of bed, rub your eyes, walk to class, and no one will say a thing. There are so many different characters on the street and in your classes. It's pretty much impossible to judge anyone as unusual because there will definitely be someone weirder around the corner. I like that people are generally less concerned with clothes, appearances, and showing off money. It makes it easier for school and extra-curricular accomplishments to stand out.

February 2007 Winner

Darius White

Darius is a Senior at St. Mark’s School in Dallas, TX. He has been accepted to Stanford and will attend later this year.

Darius was awarded first prize of a $1,000 scholarship and 10 College Prowler Guidebooks.

Here’s a tip for Darius on dealing with the opposite sex (girls) at Stanford this fall, straight from the College Prowler Guidebook to Stanford.

Best Place to Meet Guys/Girls @ Stanford.

You are likely to meet a potential boyfriend/girlfriend in class, through friends, or at a party. Every couple at Stanford tends to have a pretty unique story. Frat parties aren’t great for meeting people—smaller, quieter house parties are more conducive to meeting and talking with others. Some students are quick to point out the critical timing required by the quarter system. For the first couple weeks, everyone wants to have fun, and many may end up in various romantic situations. By the middle and end of the quarter, most students are so bogged down with work that they let their social lives slip away.

January 2007 Winner

Zahrah Fadel

Zahrah is a Senior at Detroit Country Day School in Beverly Hills, MI. She has been accepted to the University of Michigan and will attend later this year.

Zahrah was awarded first prize of a $1,000 scholarship and 10 College Prowler Guidebooks.

Here’s a tip for Zahrah when it’s time to choose her dorm at Michigan, straight from the College Prowler Guidebook to Michigan.

"I’d avoid Bursley and Baits like the plague. They’re on North Campus, and that's a 10-15 minute bus ride from Central Campus (where practically everything is). North Campus is like Canada: It’s our friendly neighbor to the North. Most people never go up there unless they absolutely have to, or because they got stuck living there as freshmen."

December 2006 Winner

Steve Paquin

Steve is a Senior at Loyola Blakefield High School in Towson, MD. He has been accepted to Yale University and will attend later this year.
