Gustavus Adolphus College Students
Tell It Like It Is
Gust-a-what? In case you’re wondering, it’s “gus-TAY-vus a-DOL-phus.” And those who attend are called Gusties.
Gustavus is a school rich in tradition and spirit.
For instance,
did you know:
- One of the most recognizable events on campus, the Nobel Conference is held for two days every fall. Nobel laureates come to campus to discuss different science-related topics each year.
- When winter finally rolls around, students grab a tray from the Caf and go “traying” down the main hill on campus.
- Rama-lama-ding-dong refers to the monstrous ice cream sundae at Ruttles. Finish it and you can get your name on the wall.
- Due to a recent hazing controversy, Gustavus no longer holds an official “Greek rush” period. Rush and pre-rush are now known as “recruitment” and “pledging,” respectively.
- Liquor stores in Minnesota close at 10 p.m. and are not open on Sundays.
- Gustavus offers two general education choices for students, which they must determine at the beginning of their first year. While the majority of students opt for Curriculum I, a handful of students become involved in Curriculum II, which angles their general education requirements to “look at the development of Western cultures with comparisons to non-Western cultures, the examination of values, and the theme of the individual and community.”
Gustavus is truly unique in its outlook on education. Here is a sample of what current students say about their overall experience at Gustavus:
“I loved my time at Gustavus. There was so much to do, both in and out of the classroom.
College is a time for you to discover and create your identity, and Gustavus is a place that nurtures that. Professors encourage your success and act as wonderful mentors, and the community is a great place to be a part of. I wish I was back at Gustavus now that I’ve graduated!”
“I loved Gustavus—everything about it—
even the bad stuff like the wind, the funky smells from the farms, and parking tickets. It was fantastic, and I would do it again in a heartbeat if someone would let me.”
