Fashion Institute of Technology Students
Tell It Like It Is
The most common urban legends about FIT are:
- All of its students are fashion designers or are in fashion-related programs
- All the male students are gay
Not true, and not entirely true. FIT actually has a business and technology school that is outstanding, and the college is working on publicizing it. As far as the guys, let's allow the students to speak for themselves:
“Guys are
either gay or extremely metrosexual—meaning they are straight but have a lot of gay qualities—and only a few are straight without a girlfriend. The girls are pretty, and most dress to impress.”
“Guys—there aren’t too many at FIT, but
NYC has two million single men available! FIT is all hot girls in miniskirts—a straight guy’s dream.”

Academics:
“The professors know what they are talking about! They have real industry experience, and they care that you understand what’s going on. The classes can be demanding, but the teachers work to make them interesting. Get used to group work. By your third year, you will know most of the people in your major, which can be nice. It can also be competitive or just the thing you need to motivate you to take your work seriously.
At FIT, you know that when you take a look around the classroom, you are looking at your job competition.”
“I took a class last semester called Brand Management. The teacher who taught it is the brand manager for
USA Today. So,
you really do get taught by professionals, not just professors, here at FIT.”
Overall Experience:
“FIT students all want the best industry education they can get, and they know that FIT is the school for them. FIT students have an academic industry pressure on them that many other university professors don’t put on their students.
FIT students strive for similar goals—to be the best in their desired fields and to be a step ahead of all the rest.”
“I had a great experience at FIT. You can get as involved as you want to be and really be included in some different on-campus communities, or simply get lost in the crowd.
If you’re goal-motivated and job-oriented, this is the place for you.”
