A campus visit and a brochure or two won't make you sure that Reed is the right school for you. The College Prowler guidebook to Reed gives current students a chance to speak the unbiased truth about their school...and gives you the chance to feel like an insider before you ever set foot on campus!
Academics:
'The teachers are very cool and very thought provoking. None of them act as if they hold the right answers and that you are wrong, but rather they approach everything like a discussion that they could learn something from.'
'I feel like I have opportunities here that I'll never have anywhere else. The professors challenge me in a way that I've never experienced before and make me love whatever I'm studying. The professors are incredibly encouraging of independent research. Right now, I'm doing research on something that's interested me for years, and although I'm only sleeping three or four hours a night, it is so incredibly worth it. Don't go to Reed if you don't want to spend hours and hours in the library each night.'
Nightlife:
'As far as I can see, bars and clubs off campus are pretty much off limits for people under 21. This leaves the two disappointing options of either partying at Reed houses off campus or the occasional party on campus. This is not the place to come for mingling sweat with dozens of drunken ruffians.'
And did you know that . . .
Although no traditional Greek system exists at Reed, the school does have its share of cathartic, bacchanal-style parties. For example, the end of the year festival, Renn Fayre, is a three-day-long experience combining fun, fireworks, craziness, and anything you could imagine. There are numerous parties throughout the year, such as the Classics Dorm's wine and cheese symposium and Toga Formal, which make an attempt at portraying actual Greek life through food, merriment, and drink.
