Not just any school brochure or pamphlet will inform prospective students that GC students head over to the Pub for $2 pitchers to blow off steam on Tuesdays. Also, the single-popped collar has been superseded by the double-popped collar, and for some daring souls, the triple! (We have the fraternities to thank for that one.) And it just wouldn’t be fair if incoming students were oblivious to Professor Jim Udden’s film studies courses (the much-coveted treasures of the GC course catalog).

Four years may seem like a long time to spend at one place, particularly a place as geographically and numerically small as Gettysburg College. But 90 percent of students stay. Check out what you should know before you arrive on campus overwhelmed with surprises.

• Every year on July 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, re-enactors descend on the Gettysburg battlefield to commemorate the battle. The Battle of Gettysburg in 1998 was the largest re-enactment in history, with as many as 25,000 “troops” taking part.
  
• The typical guy on campus wears fashionable, name brand clothing, is friendly, vaguely attractive, and hangs out at the Greek houses on weekends. The typical girl is much the same.
  
• Class sizes are small for a reason. You will be missed (and you will miss out) if you don’t show up on a regular basis.
  
• Each year around March, the school offers a “secret” sneaker sale, during which the CUB Ballroom is overtaken by hundreds of brand name shoes and sneakers on sale for large discounts.
  
• Greek life is far from the be-all-and-end-all of campus life at Gettysburg.
