Tell It Like It Is

Paul Tagliabue, Maria Shriver, Bill Clinton…seems like an odd grouping of names. Well, you might like to know that they all are Georgetown Hoyas.

But what is a Hoya, anyway? Years ago, Georgetown’s sports teams were known as Stonewalls. Back in those days, both Latin and Greek were required courses at Georgetown. And so it happened that one day, a Georgetown fan began shouting “Hoia Saxa,” a combination of Greek and Latin equating roughly to “What Rocks.” The slogan caught on. The spelling of Hoia was changed to aid pronunciation, and Georgetown’s team nickname was later officially changed to the Hoyas. Jack the Bulldog was adopted as the school’s mascot many years later, after dogs pushed footballs around the field as half-time entertainment at games.

“It wasn’t long ago that I was in your shoes. People kept asking, 'So, where are you going to college?' I didn’t know. I didn’t even know where to begin. It seemed like I could easily have spent four years just looking at all the options.” (Derek Richmond, author)

You don’t need four years…you just need the College Prowler guidebook!

But 97 percent that decide to go are staying for the four-year ride. Don't be a part of that 3 percent that didn't know what they were getting themselves into!
