In the past week, I’ve slept on the science floor instead of going home on one night, and on another day, I studied there from 11 in the morning to midnight for a test—and you question how hard the science department is?

Overall Experience
Washington & Lee -
Lexington, VA

Year after year, Washington and Lee has been remarkably successful at producing happy students. Freshmen usually come in starry-eyed, and leave four years later, content, happy, grateful for an awesome experience, and nostalgic for all the good times gone by. The demanding expectations of faculty don’t seem to put a serious damper on the general feeling of good cheer. One objective gauge of this is W&L’s remarkably active and supportive alumni network, which supports the University, stays in touch to get jobs for students, and most recently, chipped in cash to the tune of $240 million for massive modernization projects.
Students give high marks to the educational quality here, as well as to the natural setting and the sense of community and respect engendered by the Honor System and a tradition of gentility. But as their comments have shown, some students are put off by the small-town environment and the dominance of Greek life on campus, as well as by recent friction between students and the administration over alcohol policies and changes to their beloved Spring term. Most biting is some of the criticism leveled at the Greek system for allegedly crippling the social options for students who don’t really want to party all the time. Many students here believe their school is like no other—an example of what college life should be—and want to keep it that way.

"I knew that I wanted to come to W&L from the second I drove up, and it’s met every single expectation that I had. The Honor Code is everything I expected, and the profs were more challenging—and yet more genuine—than I expected."

"W&L is not for everybody. I’ve ended up really liking it because I’ve found people who share my interests. But then there’s some people that the school’s just not suited for. Make sure you look into the school extensively—spend the night if you can. Know that it’s almost exclusively Greek—you have to be a really independent person to thrive here and enjoy it if you’re not going to get involved in the Greek system."

 |
"I think that, for the most part, I’ve been satisfied so far. However sometimes, the small size can be intimidating because, sometimes, you feel like you can’t have any privacy."
|
 |
"I love W&L, but there are certain things about it that you need to like if you’re going to enjoy yourself. First, you have to be cool about being at a really small school. You have to be comfortable enough with yourself if you’re not from the South. Second, you should probably be okay with being in the Greek scene. Also, we don’t inflate grades here. Yeah, you might be really smart, but it won’t be easy. It’s well known that certain teachers hate on freshmen."

 |
"I know that a W&L education means a lot—the alumni network is ridiculously good. The fact that you survived is cool enough. Let’s not talk about graduating, because I love it so much. I’m actually contemplating going into law school here because I love it so much."
