The professors are well educated, and most that I’ve had are nice. In your lower-division classes, there will be about 300 people in a class. At a smaller private school, you will have about 30 people in all your classes, whether it’s upper or lower division. Here, you will interact more with the teacher’s assistants, who are grad students. They will be the ones who will grade your exams. Professors just lecture.

When students contemplate their overall experience at UCSD, they usually base their decisions around the friends they have made and the good memories they have. Although academics at UCSD are world-class, they are not always the most important factor in the overall experience. Social life at UCSD is known to be a little boring; many students wished they had a more active social life, but most still managed to find friends with whom they created lasting memories.
After adjusting to life at a large university, students enjoyed their time at UCSD and could not imagine going anywhere else. They especially liked living in such a beautiful area and attending a challenging research university. Living on their own for college was in invaluable experience and taught many students just as much as lectures and labs. Most of all, students were appreciative of their friends, and the people they met had the biggest impact on their overall experience.

"I’ve been pretty happy with my experiences so far. I think that it’s gone pretty smoothly and has actually been fun here."

"I love it here. The school’s a little antisocial at first, but once you meet some people it can be really fun. It’s a beautiful campus surrounded by a really cool city with tons of things to do. It’s a very good school."

"The academics and level of education here is one of the best in California and in the country, but I hated the lack of social life. I met a lot of friends, but never really felt like I belonged."

"Honestly, I have had the most amazing four years of my life at UCSD. It all depends on what you expect out of it and what you put into it. I’ve been lucky to meet the coolest people who I know will be lifelong friends. UCSD is a totally chill campus, so if you’re coming here and expecting huge parties every weekend, you’re going to be disappointed. I’ve never regretted my decision to come here."

"I’m pretty ambivalent about it. My experience has been awesome just because of the people I’ve met and just living in San Diego for four years in itself creates a different mentality. I don’t regret having gone to UCSD, but I know my college experience would have been fuller if I had gone somewhere else, like State. UCSD is definitely its own University unlike any other, in both good and bad ways."
