If you like the outdoors, Berkeley is definitely one of the best places to go to school. It’s so close to the ocean, the mountains, woodlands—the weather from spring to early fall is sublime.

Overall Experience
Berkeley -
Berkeley, CA
Overall, students have very positive things to say about their experiences at Cal, stating that there is no other place they could have met the extraordinary people, professors, opportunities, and challenges. But Berkeley is known for being home to some insatiable critics, and some who give it a relatively good grade still cite annoyances you must come to expect and endure if you want to make the most of your time at Berkeley. The bureaucratic nuisances of waiting in long, seemingly pointless lines and being known as a number, rather than a person, combined with the little sympathy you receive from teachers or other students for poor performance or attitude are elements of Cal that several students gripe. Some eventually get over them.
The most annoying things about Berkeley—its sometimes over-impacted classes, icy professors, cut-throat competitiveness, and occasional sense of social confinement—are all part of being at a public school with a large, diversified student body. Some people will argue the extra $40,000 a year you pay to attend a small, private school goes into smoothing out these problems, and that the money spent is well worth it. However, the majority of Berkeley students go through, at times, the exhausting process of acclimating and growing to love their large university, asserting that they’ve gained more academic strength, tenacity, and open-mindedness than they could have at any other institution. They even have an extra hundred grand or so in their pockets!

"I’ve never been happier in my life than where I am now, here in Berkeley. Both the campus and town are amazingly diverse and offer opportunities for just about everything."

"At first, I had a hard time adjusting to the ‘hippie-ness’ of the area. I thought I had made the wrong choice. But by October, I had made a lot of great friends, loved my classes, and had joined some campus organizations—I was having the time of my life. Berkeley is such a great school; the classes really make you think and work hard, and in some cases, they have really inspired me. The people you meet here are amazing; I’d never want to go anywhere else."

"Overall, my time here has been awesome. I’ve had such a fun and rewarding experience. I came to Berkeley without ever visiting, and I have never regretted my decision. I definitely do not wish that I went somewhere else. I love Berkeley, and I can guarantee that you won’t find any other place like it. Berkeley is a very distinguished school; its history is amazing, and the people are one-of-a-kind. You will not find better quality people anywhere else."

"I loved my four years at Berkeley. They were very challenging, and I never studied harder in my life, but it was worth it. I love the people I met through classes and campus groups and will probably keep in touch with many of them for a long time. Given the amount of education and benefits, Berkeley is the best deal out there."

"Although it has been really tough for me, I wouldn’t want to be in another school. Berkeley is one of the toughest and most competitive schools in the country, and those two qualities allow Berkeley to prepare its graduates better than any other school."
