Many of the teachers really don’t care if you like them. They don’t care if you understand the material, and they don’t care if their class is interesting.

Overall Experience
Johns Hopkins -
Baltimore, MD
Students who love Hopkins and students who hate it both recognize that it isn’t the school for everyone. Many students wish that Hopkins offered grade inflation, as other top schools do. Even people who work hard end up with low grades. This encourages some students to put studying above any social activity in hopes of being one of several people in a class who receives an “A.” Hopkins offers a variety of social programming, but no one forces students to participate. There’s no one holding your hand and leading you to fun activities. Even though students complain, most say that they’ve enjoyed being challenged by their experiences at Hopkins.
Hopkins presents a well-rounded experience for some students, but not every student takes advantage of the academic, social, and extracurricular opportunities. Some students wish that Hopkins encouraged students to get involved in all aspects of University life, but once you realize that it doesn’t, you can make your own choices about how you want to spend your time. Academics and facilities are strong points at Hopkins. While on-campus dining and nightlife have not been strong points in the past, the administration is presently putting time and money into improving these aspects of University life.

"I appreciated the challenge. I enjoyed the fact that I actually had to work to succeed here. This is a great place for some people, but it’s not for everyone. I would definitely come back here."

"I really like Hopkins. For me, it’s a good balance of liberal and conservative views. I think that I’m getting a great education and that students are really working to make the overall social experience better. I still kind of wish that more students at Hopkins got excited about the school. I think that they don’t appreciate the opportunities here. I sometimes feel that way about the professors, also."

"Naturally, there are things I’ve liked and things I haven’t, but overall, I’ve had a good experience, and I’m glad I came."

"My experience has been great. I love Hopkins."

"Overall, I think I had a good college experience at Hopkins. I was pushed to my limits and was challenged in many ways, and I think I came out a better person for it. I often wondered what it would have been like had I gone to a different school."
