The diversity on campus could be better, but it isn't as bad as some people might want you to believe. There are many different ethnicities (though maybe not in large numbers), and the gay/lesbian community is well represented. Political and religious views on campus are also quite diverse.

As most students realize by their second or third year at Illinois Wesleyan, this school is exactly what it claims to be: a small, liberal arts school. This small student body facilitates intimate peer relationships but prevents social interaction on a large scale. The liberal arts approach to education is meant to introduce new ways for students to approach problems, as well as expose students to fields of study they may not otherwise experience. These gen ed requirements can be burdensome for music majors, theater majors, or students with a double major, who already need to overload on classes.
For many students, IWU could be substituted with a more affordable institution. For business majors, there are more sensible options. The business and economics school at IWU is respectable, but not worth the amount of tuition as compared to state schools. The atmosphere at IWU benefits from a mix of academia, down-to-earth students, and intelligent students with strong opinions. Conversations and colloquiums on campus are informed and debated, but pretension is popular. IWU is a respectable school on par with other small schools in Illinois, but is not as academically intense as the University of Chicago or Washington University. Students who go to Illinois Wesleyan would like the powerhouse academics of U of Chicago or Wash U, but appreciate a smaller community and more relaxed approach.

"In retrospect, I sometimes wonder what life would be like at a bigger state school, but the community at IWU is great and the attention to students is incomparable to anything at a state school, where you might have 300 people in a class."

"At first, I was bummed I didn’t get into University of Chicago or Washington University, but from what I’ve now learned about those institutions, I’m thankful for the smaller community and atmosphere here."
"I love IWU and wouldn’t go anywhere else because I wouldn’t know how to get there."
"Wesleyan is a good school, for the most part. Consider your intended major. If you could get the degree at a state school, do that. If you are a theater, art, music, nursing, or philosophy major, you should strongly consider IWU."
"I don’t wish I were anywhere else, because I plan to go to grad school. IWU is a great launching point for further education."
