Because Hampton is not in a college town, a freshman or sophomore may feel quite hopeless, but because of its smaller size and feel, most freshmen can get an upperclassman to provide transportation.
I thought about it a lot when I was an underclassman, and I realized that there simply is not enough parking at Hampton, so it just makes sense.
Hampton really turns around in terms of transportation when you either move off campus or bring your car.

Hampton University requires an acquired patience and has issues you would probably not endure at another university. The financial aid mix ups, runaround, and the registrar’s office’s inability to provide answers can make any Hamptonian want to pack their bags and transfer elsewhere. The crazy weather, poor transportation and parking, and the neverending hunt for something to do at night, while frustrating, can also lead to some interesting memories and experiences. It can even make for a good story or two. On the other hand, the educational experience students receive is one of the best in the HBCU system, full of inspirational teachers and awesome classes. The friends you make and relationships you build at Hampton make any student or alumni proud to live out a Hampton University experience. Many meet their lifetime mates either while attending Hampton, or by meeting a Hampton alumni later in life at a job or other event. Hampton students and alumni are everywhere and can tell you about the good times and bad times they spent at the University.
The HU experience is definitely one-of-a-kind. At Hampton, you come in with the feeling that this is going to be the best experience of your life, when in actuality, it has become a lesson of choice and decisions, yet not regretted. The campus scenery will entice you, the academics will challenge you, the student body will enthrall you, and everything else will, without doubt, fall into place. The college experience is, in the long run, what you make of it. And at Hampton, you’ll have the opportunity to make it everything you could possibly hope for and more!

"These have been the most exciting and motivating four years of my life. I went to the most recognized HBCU in the nation. I have had the most educated teachers I’ve ever known. The experience was beyond compare."

"Hampton University felt like being in high school again on one hand, and on the other hand, it was an experience that will take me into the real world. I’ve never experienced more irritation or drama before I got to HU. However, I’ve learned a lot about life at this University, and there are details of my life that would not have been the same had I gone anywhere else."

"Though it has taken me five years to get out of this piece, I don’t completely hate HU. I’ve learned a lot of lessons like studying will pay off and how you react in college is how the real world will view you. I learned that, if you want to be somebody, then you have to want to get to where you want to be, which will not be easy."

"What can I say? I am graduating in seven months and I can’t wait, literally!"
|
 |
"I have inspired students to come here, and I want to continue to do so. This school has so much to offer its students, and I have been blessed to have received so much from this University. Thank you HU!"
