Cornell is moving more toward having professor and student interactions take place outside of the classroom. One effort in doing so is by having ‘faculty fellows’ for each residence hall. These faculty members associate with the residents through social and educational programs that the resident assistants organize. Each residence hall also has a ‘faculty-in-residence,’ a faculty member who actually lives in the residence hall. Again, they socialize and take part in programs with the students.

Students express both praise and criticism of their overall experience at Cornell University. Comments on the whole, however, seem to suggest that most students have had more positive experiences than negative ones. The general response indicates that Cornell teaches you serious and essential life lessons that will provide graduates with an advantage over the course of their lives following college. Students claim that Cornell experiences give them vital exposure to hard work, intensity, and cutthroat competition, which are certainly aspects characteristic of the real world. Many students are very grateful for the discipline and work ethic that they have developed here, which has become integral to their progress and success. One student clearly articulates, “The one thing I can say about Cornell is that nothing is handed to you.” These words summarize the Cornell experience.
Despite its shortcomings, Cornell has fulfilled many of the needs and desires of current students who are very glad that they chose Cornell, though many admit that the experience is really what you make of it. If you have a tendency to coast and bring out the negative in things, you’re bound to be unhappy. If you’re willing to take the time to try new things, get involved in the community, and stay open-minded, you’re guaranteed to be in for an unparalleled and highly-rewarding college journey.

"I love Cornell. It’s really amazing here, and the connections I’m making are helping me get into a doctoral program later on. It really is an amazing school with amazing alumni."

"I’ve never regretted my decision to choose Cornell. I just graduated, and wish I could spend another four years here. It’s what you make of it. The academics are great, and you have the opportunity to make some amazing friends. That’s what I’ll miss the most."

"I really enjoyed being here at Cornell. The academics are great, and I’ve gotten along really well with all of the people I’ve met. In general, the professors have all been very good, too. I really don’t have any complaints about anything except maybe the weather. If you’re going to be in the Northeast, then you’re going to suffer that negative repercussion either way."

"I don’t think that Cornell is for everyone. I think that it is a great school, but plenty of people might be miserable here. It’s actually quite intense. If you come here, you will work hard—they don’t give away grades here. I’m the type of person, however, who really likes a challenging, intense environment, so Cornell is perfect for me in this respect. It also has a very active social scene, so it’s a balanced school in that regard."

"Overall, I wish I had gone to a smaller, more personal school with smaller classes, fewer TAs, and a less competitive environment. Students here are very cutthroat, so get ready."
