Illinois State University Students Tell It Like It Is

What is Normal anyway?

What could a college that is in a town called Normal and surrounded by cornfields possibly have to offer? Despite boasting an amazing farmer’s market where the ears of corn are picked fresh, there is a lifestyle here that students love to talk about.

“I hated the professors in most of my general education classes. Now that I’m into my major classes, I’ve gotten to know them on a personal level and like them a lot more. I enjoy my major classes much more than general education courses.”

“The food on campus is great, and there is a variety of places to choose from. Whatever you feel like eating, you can get it that day. Having a lot to choose from is one of the best things about ISU’s on-campus dining.”

“The restaurants off campus are good. Potbelly’s, Chili’s and Famous Dave’s are the places to go. Zorba’s has really cheap breakfasts, and you’ll see tons of students there the morning after going out.”

“It is not convenient to live off campus. The town of Normal is trying to build more housing off campus for students, but the nice places are few and hard to come by.”

The diversity here at ISU is bad—very bad! Everyone here is basically white. One of ISU’s missions should be to create more diversity.”

“Basketball is pretty popular, and there are many IM sports to get involved in. You will hear a lot of people talking about the IM sports once their season starts.”

Other unique things going on at ISU include the student TV station that is constantly nominated for awards and the “Innocence Project” that aims to help free people on death row who have been wrongly accused.

These things are only the tip of the iceberg at ISU. If these sound interesting, wait until you see what other students are saying!

Find out if ISU truly has something for you, straight from the students’ mouths. Visiting campus isn't enough.

The College Prowler Process

While writing our series of college guides, we felt it was critical that our content was unbiased and unaffiliated with any college or university. By hiring current students as authors, we strive to create college guides that truly represent each campus. Our guides cover both the good and the bad, and whether survey responses point to recurring trends or varying opinions, these sentiments are directly and proportionally expressed through our guides.

From the very beginning, student writers gather the most up-to-date stats, facts, and inside information on their colleges. They fill each section with student quotes and summarize the findings in editorial reviews. In addition, each school receives a collection of letter grades (A through F) that reflect student opinion. Once a guide is written, additional college students serve as editors and check for accuracy even more extensively. This same process is applied to all of the 258 colleges and universities College Prowler currently covers. Each guide is the result of endless student contributions, hundreds of pages of research and writing, and countless hours of hard work. All of this has led to the creation of a student information network that stretches across the nation. It’s no easy accomplishment, but it’s the reason that our guides are such a great resource.
